The Hungarian Competition Authority closed its proceedings against MESZ without finding an infringement
On 26 January 2026, the Competition Council of the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) closed proceedings VJ/41/2024, opened against the Hungarian Energy Drink Association in 2024. No infringement was found against MESZ and no fine or other sanction was imposed.
In October 2024, GVH publicly announced that it would examine the basis of certain MESZ communications about energy drinks. Numerous press outlets reported on the opening of the proceedings.
According to the closing decision, MESZ’s liability under Section 9(1) of the law on unfair commercial practices towards consumers could not be established. GVH did not identify a direct interest linking MESZ membership fees to energy drink sales or sales promotion. The proceedings had therefore become moot, and the Competition Council closed them.
The outcome was that no infringement was found against the Hungarian Energy Drink Association in these proceedings, and neither a fine nor another sanction was imposed.
MESZ continues to work towards factual, verifiable source based information about energy drinks that supports responsible consumption.
